Baby Ronan was born asleep at 21 weeks on 12th May 2007. We had suffered 2 miscarriages before
Ronan and were delighted when we found out I was pregnant again in January 2007. We were so
relieved when we got passed the '12-week scan' and started getting excited about becoming
parents. Unfortunately when we had the 20-week scan our precious baby was diagnosed with renal
agenesis (no kidneys) and we were given the heartbreaking news that our baby would die at birth due
to lack of kidneys and underdeveloped lungs (no kidneys meant that I had no amniotic fluid which is
required for the baby's lung development). We took the decision to terminate my pregnancy as
we couldn't bear the thought of our little one suffocating at birth. On Saturday 12th May
2007, we went into hospital and I was induced. After 10 hours of labour, 3 morphine injections
later, our beautiful baby Ronan was born asleep and peaceful. He was 400g and 25cm long. At birth
he was diagnosed with Sirenomelia (mermaid syndrome) which is a rare (1 in 60,000 - 70,000 births in
UK) fatal anomaly. Only two babies born with Sirenomelia survived due to them having a working
kidney. The first was Tiffany Yorks in the USA and the other is Milagros Cerron in Peru.
We are devastated at the loss of our much wanted and much loved baby. Every day gets a little bit
better, but he has left a lovely baby-boy shaped hole in our hearts.

we hope you have had a lovely angleversary today, your 1st, and you like the flowers and cards we got you and the butterfly that flew out to you. O precious, tiny, sweet little one,
you will always be to me,
so perfect, pure & innocent
just as you were meant to be.
We dreamed of you & of your life
& all that it would be.
we waited & longed for you to come
& join our family.
We never had the chance to play,
to laugh, to rock, to wiggle.
We long to hold you, touch you now
& listen to you giggle.
I'll always be your mother,
he'll always be your dad
you will always be our child
the child that we had.
But now you're gone...but yet you're here
we'll sense you everywhere,
you are our sorrow & our joy,
there's love in every tear
Just know our love goes deep & strong
